2005-08-26 - 2:32 p.m. Happy 85th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage in the United States. Here are some links to demonstrate why we still need feminism: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xml=/connected/2005/08/18/ecfmusic.xml http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4183166.stm http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Anti-Feminism/ http://www.jrrobertssecurity.com/security-news/security-crime-news0043.htm http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=15050&Cr=afghan&Cr1= http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=15164&Cr=iraq&Cr1=
N.B. - I'm pretty stereotypically humorless about my feminism. I'm talkin' 'bout *real* feminism - the kind that is concerned with social equality between the sexes (none of this precious "egalitarian" or *shudder* "equalist" crap - feminism is and always has been about equality. I disagree with individual feminists a lot of the time, and I certainly have a dark sense of humor, but I won't stand for anti-feminist bullshit. And I'm pretty damned tired of the "all women do X" or "all women like Y" nonsense. When anyone says something like this, everyone with two X chromosomes is lumped together - their gender supercedes their capacity for individual thought - and it's dehumanizing. I am a goddamn human being first and a woman only incidentally. And I can bloody well think for myself. On the upside: I'm going to a suffrage party in half an hour. There will be cookies and bread and cheese!
