2003-09-22 - 2:40 p.m. Something I have posted on the internet has gotten an amazing response. A while back, I wrote a short essay for my friend Dave's website about a song I really enjoyed when I was younger. ( Here's the link to the essay ) Not only did Dave get an email from a delightful Brazilian woman named Flavia, who loved the song as much as I did, but he got an email FROM THE ACTUAL WRITER OF THE SONG, which he also posted on his site. ( He posted it here ) Reading the response by Johnny Fly (is that his real name?) makes me partially sad (because of the way his life turned out) and partially amazed (the guy who wrote Fade to Black is aware of my existance!) Rereading my essay makes me sad, because I really meant for it to be about how wonderful the song is (which is why I titled it "A Moment of Perfect Beauty), but I'm really not that good a writer, and it ended up being about how disappointing his album was. I don't want Johnny Fly to think that 10 years later, people are still talking about his awful album. I want Johnny Fly to think that he wrote a song that still stops me dead in my tracks and that is one of the most stark and beautiful portrayals of human emotion I've ever heard. But I guess I'll be happy with the fact that something I've written has made some sort of an influence. Godspeed, Johnny Fly.
